Western Trails Riding Stables
For the past 38 years, three generations of the Schenk family have introduced visitors and locals alike to the wonder of horseback riding in Garrett County.
Western Trails Riding Stables was founded in 1970 by Fredlock Schenk, who opened a campsite on his horse farm on Mayhew Inn Road. He and his son Larry began offering horseback riding on the trails of their property and the business grew from there.
Today Western Trails is owned by Larry’s son Gene Schenk and his wife Mariel. They have continued in the family tradition offering horseback riding and more for every age & ability.
Gene and Mariel offer hour long trail rides that cover five miles of scenic Garrett County terrain with open fields, wooded mountainside and views of Deep Creek Lake. “It’s not unusual to see wild turkey or deer on one of our trail rides,” says Mariel. Trail rides can be geared for all ages and toddlers are welcome to ride on their parents lap. They also offer pony rides for the little ones. All rides are led by experienced guides, including area youth that have grown up spending their summers at Western Trails with their horses.
Western Trails Riding Stable also offers family hayrides. With this fun option, their guide will take your group of ten or more on a 30 minute hayride, then enjoy a bonfire afterwards. “Guests are welcome to bring their own food and drink,” explains Mariel. “This is a great activity for family reunions looking for something different they can all do together year round,” she adds.
The Schenks also breed horses and have over 75 trained horses available for their guests. All of their horses have been trained and ridden for at least one year before they are ready to lead guests. Gene and Mariel also offer riding lessons and horse training.
